Spambot Countermeasures

`Hi Yall. If you're on the mod team, you know that we've been flooded with spambots since the site went up, and the rate at which the robots seem to be getting through our captcha fields appears to be increasing. My inbox gets at least 20 signups a day from fake sounding not-squad members. Moderating them all has become a serious pain.

As a way to investigate alternatives, I have implemented a question-and-response gate which will replace the Captcha on Squad Signup. If you want to make an account here, you will be asked to answer a simple gaming related question correctly.

Mods that have sufficient priveleges, feel free to add your own questions to the mix. You can find the option to add more questions inside the PHPBB ACP control panel, in the GENERAL tab, under Spambot Countermeasures.

The more questions we get in there, the more difficult it will be for robots to slam jam fake board members, so go in and add more gaming questions! Don't make it too hard though. I don't want to have to look up something on Wikipedia just to invite new members.

Did we ever implement this? The spam bots are starting to be a real pain.

Hm, probably should PM the questions, too. No point if they're publicly visible, right?

Changed the spambot countermeasures on signup to Captcha for now to see if that makes any difference to how many we get. The bots are apparently getting around the Q&A gate with the ability to make Google searches, so Captcha will hopefully foil that a bit better.

Captcha didn't work either. Have gone back to Q&A since it appears to be widely accepted as the most secure option, but replaced the existing questions with stuff that can't be Googled. Bonus points if you catch the references in the answers.

I'm hesitant to declare victory against Rhys1678 and the assembled forces of AgzxofiqAqwjdkj too early, but so far the new Q&As seem to be working. Let me know if you do spot any spambots getting through the net and we'll refresh the question list.
