Welcome to the world of MMOs, Destiny players

I've found it quite interesting to observe the reactions of Destiny players now that the game is out. The reason? It'll be the first time a lot of more "mainstream" players have encountered an MMO-style development model.

What does that mean? Well, the game grows and changes over time, balance is carefully monitored and adjusted and various tweaks are made in order to keep the game running smoothly and its progression curve to work well for as many people as possible.

Just this week, we've seen a hotfix to patch loot drop rates, and an upcoming major patch fiddles with the loot balance and distribution quite cobsiderably. Further down the line, it seems, there is new content planned for players to take on.

Reactions have been... mixed. Some reviews noted that the game felt "unfinished" due to some exciting sounding features not launching with the game. Some players complained that they weren't able to so easily exploit a particular challenge for loot. Others will doubtless be dismayed to find some of their items in their inventory downgraded from "Legendary" to "Rare" status.

Welcome to MMOs, folks. They change considerably over time -- my current tipple Final Fantasy XIV has had many changes and additions since its launch just over a year ago -- and they're usually... USUALLY in the best interests of the game and the player base as a whole. It's an interesting new thing to get used to if you're accustomed to more "fixed" experiences, though, and it's not always easy -- but it's often really exciting, too.
