Roses WIll Rise (Formerly: Brigand Roses)

by asatiir » Sun Sep 21, 2014 7:37 pm

Since I'm kind of on standby for national service military training, which is now compulsory over here. I'm putting my major projects on hold and working on a smaller game project to have out there before I'm called in. It's still in a work in progress but I plan to build it bit by bit as I go.

The plan I'm going for is a very basic SRPG ala Shining Force and/or Fire Emblem focusing on four characters, not sure if I will or can include more later with crafting items and weapons in between with salvage collected in battle. Right now I just finished the intro before the battle and thought I'd ask for feedback on the writing and flow of the intro. The RPG Maker graphics are only used as a base for now and will be changed later in the future.

Your feedback is highly appreciated!

uploaded an early build of the earlier file on GameJolt. Some grammatical fixes and a teensy bit of the battle that is still unfinished.

This is really cool. :) I love the old Shining Force games, and they're some of the only SRPGs that I've actually finished. I like the idea to keep it to only four characters not only because I might actually be able to wrap my head around it with a smaller scope but also because I'm sure it makes it easier to work on.

Leaving it down to 4 makes it a little bit manageable from a story standpoint, but also making it possible for them to have more substantial roles in the game (example: they are the shops and other "town" functions" between battle).

Sure has been a while since I've been in the Squad forums, Hello again!

My military service is slowly and finally coming to an end (should be done on the 27th of Dec), and much has changed in the game. I switched completely from RPG Maker VX Ace to Ren'Py. The game will still be a strategy RPG but now the cutscenes are more of a visual novel format, which I find easier to make and less time consuming. I've finally reached the point where I'm able to update it in small increments every week or so and I'm pretty happy with the results.

The game is available on:
  • Itch.io (anyone on there to follow?)
  • Android Play store (game is in alpha on the store so you'll have to opt in through this link.

The game is still a work in progress, which is why everything is in black and white at the moment. I didn't even include the battle system yet since I'm worrying about everything else right now and will add it once I finalize the art style I'm going for.

Since Ren'Py now officially supports porting to iOS, I'm planning on putting it up there later once I get myself a license.

Looks awesome. I'll definitely give it a shot - nice work.

Also, please tell me that military service in the mideast is exactly like Spec Ops: The Line

I can't really say that I wish that's the case, but I can say to some extent it's close

Service is over! I am now working fulltime on the game until they decide to give me my papers to go back to working at my day job. I already started working on the placeholder background and gave some of the sprites extra flair.

first placeholder background, original sketch was drawn during the service.

I'm not supposed to give placeholder graphics that much detail, but since the game will take a while to make, why not have fun with it?

For the past two weeks I've been testing out the sprite format and the animation software I'll be using for the game. This is the first pass of the animation, floaty, needs a little more work but should be a good example for what I'm going for:

Software used:
