"Vita games aren't selling!" Then try stocking them.

Went out yesterday to try and pick up a copy of Danganronpa 2. Failed, because even in specialist game stores, the Vita section was pitiful. The situation was no better in even the largest supermarkets with the biggest technology and entertainment sections.

It's no wonder Vita sales are struggling if retailers simply don't stock brand-new games that are highly anticipated by a significant proportion of Vita owners. But they won't stock Vita titles if sales are bad, so there's a self-perpetuating cycle going on here.

I ended up ordering the game from Amazon. Good job, High Street.

Funnily enough, and a shared observation from the thrift store thread, a lot of big chain stores here also have a poor Vita range. Unless you're in a retailer/rental store like GEO, or find yourself in a CBD Yamada or Bic Camera store, it's a sad clutch of the following:

- Uncharted
- Minna no Golf
- Dynasty Warriors Next
- WipEout 2048

...and a trickle of newer games. I'm hoping this is just a case of the Vita having such a strong digital marketplace, and Plus being such a success. But who knows.

I remember similar instance happened here before, Playstation Middle East's PR being absolutely clueless didn't help either. There was no news of Little King's Story coming out, and some people were asking when it will be out in physical form. They replied pretty late saying "probably next month". I've never seen it physically myself anywhere and that gem still went completely under the radar entirely. I personally prefer buying my games digitally, but that's my own preference some people still prefer physical and Playstation ME not being aware of that hurts sales for them. A loop of clusterfuck problems.

Asatiir, you're my window into the realm of corporate support for the ME region, and it sounds markedly haphazard!

Is it getting better? I mean, it can't be exchange rate disparity for places like your neck of the woods, so what drives the muddle-headedness? Is it cultural deficit on the part of the big companies? Trepidation due to new territory? Infrastructure?

I can understand in places like South America, but UAE etc.? Very curious.

Sony's PR are utterly useless most of the time, but they are better case than Microsoft and Nintendo. Xbox 360 had its official release here 2 years after the rest of the world, and opened up Xbox LIVE just 2 years ago. It was so bad that game distributors were taking out online codes from game boxes because it wasn't working here at the time. As for Nintendo, they kept getting different distributors time and time again and right now it seems like they're non existent and we're relying on shops to import their stuff.

Sony, while yes we had to wait for European release dates, we do have a UAE region PSN store(other countries like Saudi, Oman Qatar and Bahrain have their own variations too) official release dates, Middle East is one of their major markets.

Speaking of Sony PR, I can't help but feel a bit bad for people like Shahid Ahmad and his team. Shahid is one of the nicest people in the business, and he has a genuine passion for the Vita. I love seeing him enthuse over upcoming releases, and flicking the bird to people who say Vita has no games in the classiest way possible. ("Oh really? Here's a list of 20 excellent titles that are releasing imminently. Oh look, one just released.") I feel bad because despite their hard work, we're still in this situation.

That said, I think digital sales for Vita are probably quite healthy. Although the memory cards are expensive, you can fit a decent quantity of games on there -- and not just $10 timewasters, either; full-scale games. It's very convenient to be able to carry around a whole library of games without having to swap cartridges; I'm guessing -- all I can do in the absence of official sales figures -- that many Vita owners are well on board the digital-only train.

I've owned a Vita for a couple of years and it's never occurred to me to buy a physical copy of a game. My Vita came with Assassin's Creed: Liberation and it's sat in that slot since the day I unpacked it. I'm not committed to 100% digital or anything, but between PS+, PSN sales, my insane backlog, and the relative lack of big "I need to buy this day one" Vita exclusives, I've never really thought about buying a physical copy of a Vita game.

It also helps that, because Sony doesn't have a Canadian office (I guess?), there's no sales tax on PSN purchases here. PSN is therefore effectively 13% cheaper than retail, all things being equal.

As a person about to purchase Danganrompa 2, that is good to know -- though I also had zero expectations that the game would be available ANYWHERE at retail.

The day I trudged around Toronto looking for Fire Emblem was the last time. OK, well no technically the day I did the exact same thing looking for Bravely Default was the last time.

Quandry: I eventually lent Bravely Default to my wife, who is enjoying it on HER DS, which had me second guessing digital releases. We only have 1 vita in the house though, not a problem.

Will both of us have to buy Phoenix Wright vs Layton though? That is the question.

This is pretty much the tact I've taken. With the Vita, I can see how PSN+ would greatly hamper new game sales. Because I don't play it everyday, my backlog with PSN+ freebies is just enough to keep me going without feeling the need to buy new stuff. In a way, Sony has robbed Peter to pay Paul with the Vita. It probably pays off in the long run though locking in those subscribers.

There's little argument that Plus is great value, but it's not for everyone. I have no intention of signing up, for example, for one simple reason: I'm uncomfortable with the idea of my games disappearing when my subscription lapses. This may not be an issue right now, but ponder the future when the Vita is a "retro" machine and PSN for it doesn't exist any more. How will you play those games then?

It may not be an issue, but I prefer to be safe. Also my backlog is big enough when built under my own steam -- I don't need Sony adding to it every month! :)
